Workshop 6: Consequences (writing)

The concept of this activity is the same as the previous one, but with writing instead of drawing.  Different rules can be followed:

  • The game can include a different person writing each of the following, in this order: “THE adjective, noun, adverb, verb, THE adjective, noun”
  • Or, each person can write a sentence, only seeing what the person immediately before them wrote (and not the previous sentences).

Like the previous activity, this one encourages play and an openness to letting go of control. It is unguided teamwork, as the students are working together without realizing it.

Examples:

Like the exquisite corpse drawings, this is also an activity that the Surrealists did to let go of control, explore creative possibilities, and create absurd connections.

  • Group sentence:
    • ex. "The green duck sweetly sang the dreadful dirge."

  • Group poem:

  • Group story: Each person contributes the following criteria in this order:
    • The words   and the world said   followed by what it said
    • The words   and the consequence was   followed by details of what happened as a result
    • What she did
    • What he did
    • The words   she wore   followed by she wore
    • The words   he wore   followed by what he wore
    • The word   to   followed by what they went there for
    • The word   at   followed by where they met
    • A woman's name
    • The word   met   followed by an adjective
    • A man's name
    • An adjective

An example of this story:

Mediocre Joe   met  transparent Kim   at   the bowling alley,   to   dig for gold
He wore   a seafoam   green leisure suit
She wore   a sandwich board
He   poured a martini
She   looked at her watch
And the consequence was,   the band got back together
And the world said   “Somehow, I think I saw this coming.”
