ScienceFest 2023 Photography Contest

Return to description

The camera—the intricate interplay of lenses, sensors, and processors. It immortalizes our moments, it drives us to think about colours, shadows, composition. It shapes our social life. It is a tool for art. It is indispensable and omnipresent. But what if the camera could teach us about our world? What if a picture were more than a collection of objects and spaces, but an insight into the fabric of the universe? What if the camera could reveal the hidden? What if the camera could be a tool for science?

As part of the 9th annual ScienceFest conference, and inspired by the SPACE theme of What if?, students in all programs are invited to interpret this theme through photography.

Contest rules and submission criteria:

  1. Use the form below to submit a high resolution image of no more than 10MB. Ideally a resolution of 3000 pixels minimum in the long dimension will be sufficient for large format printing. Be sure to also retain as high of a resolution image as possible in the event that your image is selected for printing.
  2. In addition to the photograph, include a maximum 100 word caption that captures its relevance to science and to the contest theme. The caption is very important if you are serious about winning the contest. It should present your artistic vision for the photograph, and the connection with science and with the theme. Be creative.
  3. Though digital SLR cameras generally produce better quality images than a cell phone, any camera type may be used. Indicate the camera used on the submission form.
  4. Also, software such as Adobe Photoshop is permitted for enhancements and retouches, but not to modify the contents or authenticity of the subject of the photograph.
  5. You may submit a maximum of three pictures. A separate submission is required for each.

The deadline to submit your photo and description has been extended to Friday, April 21, 2023!

Judging criteria and selection process:

  1. Photographs will be judged on scientific value, aesthetic, relevance to the theme and the written caption.
  2. A pre-selection will be made. All the images retained at this stage will be prepared for virtual publication and put on display during ScienceFest and the following week duriing SPACEweek, from May 01 - May 05, 2023.
  3. A jury will examine the photographs and select the winners (Jury Prizes). In addition, the public will be given an opportunity to vote for the best photograph (People’s Choice Award).
  4. Winners will be announced at the end of ScienceFest, and prizes given during the awards ceremony (date to be determined).
