Students create self-directed projects generated from their own interests and activities or from a list of activities taking place in the 2024-2025 academic year. The course also links to SPACE co-curricular activities.
Winter 2025 pre-semester dates:
January 7,9,10,13,15,17
The intensive course framework will allow students to fulfill additional requirements of the SPACE certificate. There will be 36 hours of class time before the start of semester, 2 checkpoints during the semester and a final presentation at the end of the students' chosen project (see below "What About Term Projects?")
The course explores problem solving, maker culture, innovation, and the future through the application of systems and design thinking, social impact tool sets and related methodologies. Students are encouraged to draw inspiration and incorporate knowledge, skills and problems from their programs and any other learning activities or extra-curriculars they may be already involved in. A strong emphasis on cross-disciplinary exploration provides guided opportunities for integration of the arts and sciences where students, working in a group or individually, are given freedom to choose a suitable format for their major term project.
The following short film provides a glimpse of students working on problems that matter to them, navigating the challenges that a relationship to the SPACE theme of en-tropy poses and reflecting on the processes by which they will arrive at their proposed solutions. Final projects, in progress at the time of filming, were presented in multiple venues and linked with other SPACE activities and projects such as those undertaken by the SPACEcorp R&D group referenced in the film.
The core of the course centers on proposing and creating a major term project that resonates with your personal interests and goals. You can choose from a variety of suggested projects aligned with activities of the 2024-2025 academic year, such as:
Alternatively, embark on a "choose-your-own-adventure" path by proposing your own project idea. Whether you prefer to work individually or collaborate with a group, this option allows you to dive deep into a topic you're passionate about. You'll have the freedom to integrate insights from your academic program, extracurricular activities, and personal experiences.
Project outcomes will be presented at the end of the Winter 2025 semester with options to participate in the annual SALTISE Education conference.
