Note: Module 4 for students

 Section for students:

A student-driven version of the Stepping Stones module

This section is specifically for students who are interested in organizing activities leading up to a major project. It could be SPACE student who are thinking about their capstone project linked to the theme of the year, and leading up to the Showcase; or perhaps ALC students who are considering what to do as part of their IA.

All are welcome to follow these guidelines which may help structure your project.

1. Organize an outing linked to your theme.

Research

  • Research exhibitions taking place in Montreal during the time of your project that have links to what it is that you are exploring
  • A number of resources in Montreal are available, including, but not limited to, the following exhibition spaces, galleries, and museums: (these examples are based on art exhibitions, but of course, this list could be expanded to include any number of other institutions in Montreal such as the Science Center, the Biodôme, the Botanical Gardens, the Cosmodôme, etc)

Initial visit

  • Once you find an exhibition that is relevant, go visit! Take notes, make links, brainstorm how the exhibition can tie into your theme
  • Alternately, you can look for online exhibitions

Organize an outing

  • Organize an outing for other students: contact the institution to arrange for a visit (perhaps even a guided visit)
  • speak with your teacher, advisor, or SPACE coordinator or fellow about a time that may work for an outing
  • If there is a fee to the outing, see with your teacher if it can be covered by the SSAP funds
  • Outings are a great way to build connections with your fellow students – just getting to the venue together can be a lot of fun
  • Bringing your fellow students out of the classroom to actively experience art, or anything for that matter, is a great way to expand everyone’s learning horizons
  • If you outing takes place during class time, ask your teacher to fill in the Outings form on the Dawson website a few days before the outing to inform the College that the class will be away.

2. A reflective response.

Brainstorm

  • While visiting the exhibition on your own (before bringing your classmates), brainstorm ways in which everyone may respond to the exhibition while considering the theme that you are working toward, or the final project that you are building up to
  • What are some ideas that you would like your classmates to explore? How might you best encourage them to think deeply about the artwork that they are seeing and make connections?

Create your assignment

  • You can think of asking specific questions about selected work, OR you can keep it more open and personal for each student
  • Bring printed copies of your reflective response questions for your fellow students on the day of the outing.

3. Give a talk about your project.

Summarize

  • This can include a summary of you research and venues, and the exhibition that you went to, as well as your experience with the reflective response and some examples of what other students wrote (with their permission, of course!). You can talk about the successes and challenges along the way,
  • This could also during the SPACE Showcase if you are a SPACE certificate student, or it could be geared toward a specific alternate project with SPACE that you are working toward; if you are an ALC or Science student, this could be where you present your final work, and describe the stepping stones you took to get there;
  • Remember to take photos along the way (with permission) to document your experience
