Myre/Williams Artist Talk and Exhibition Reflection

Return to description

Note: a reflective response about the artist talk and gallery visit counts for 3 credits towards the SPACE certificate.

Students who attended the Nadia Myre and Nico Williams artist talk and/or visited the Filiations exhibition in the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery are invited to submit a short reflective response about their experience.

Reflective Response: Nadia Myre and Nico William: Filiations

Nadia Myre (Kitigan Zibi) and Nico Williams (Aamjiwnaang) are presenting a joint exhibition at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery at Dawson College from February 2nd to March 11th entitled Filiations. They will also be giving an Artist Talk in 5B. 16 on Thursday, February 16th at 3:30PM.

The term “filiations” can be defined as the manner in which something is related to something else, specifically as a descent or derivation from a particular culture or language.[1]

Attend the Artist Talk and keep track of your thoughts about the artists’ presentations. Visit the exhibition and note down your impressions of the artwork. Do some light research on these two artists and their art practices. How do you see the works in the Filiations exhibition fitting into the artists’ larger artistic explorations? How do you see their works in conversation with each other? What are some of the links that you can determine between them? Why do you think that this title was chosen for the exhibition?

Finally, think about a “What if” scenario that peaks your curiosity and write about it. This could be related to the organization of the exhibition, the artists, the artwork presented, or anything else that you are interested in linked to Filiations. It could be a proposal of where to go from here; of how things could have been different had history turned in another direction; of the potential for change. Refer back to the exhibition and/or the Artist Talk in your description.

If students were unable to attend the talk they can still write a reflective repsonse following the same guidelines outlined above after a visit to the Filiations exhibition.

Style Guidelines:

Maximum 2 pages, typed, double-spaced (roughly 500 words)
Arial, 11 pt. font
Provide images of artworks when relevant, and include the artist, title and date of the works.
Don’t forget to include citations for your reference material in your paper.
