Annual Writing Contest 2019

Thank you to all who submitted to the second annual S.P.A.C.E. Writing Contest. The winners and honourable mentions have been notified and their pieces will be published on the S.P.A.C.E. website at the beginning of the Winter 2020 semester.

You can read the pieces written by the winners and honourable mentions here.

After a successful launch last year, S.P.A.C.E. is excited to be hosting again in 2019-2020 its second annual writing competition. Students from every discipline across the College are invited to submit writing that encourages reflection on this year’s S.P.A.C.E. theme: TECHNIQUE. Students can submit in one or more of three categories—prose (fiction or creative non-fiction), poetry, and essay.

To better understand some of the various dimensions of TECHNIQUE, we highly encourage participants to read and consider the description of this year’s theme. Of special note in the theme description:

-TECHNIQUE as a form of how-to knowledge (which may or may not be conscious)
-The process of acquiring TECHNIQUE, especially through teaching/apprenticeship/trial and error
-The aims of TECHNIQUE: cooperating and working with nature vs. dominating and exploiting it
-TECHNIQUE as enhancing our natural human abilities, for better and for worse
-The modern products of TECHNIQUE, industry and technology, and their impact on humans and the natural world
-How graduates apply the TECHNIQUEs they learn in school out in their personal and professional lives

Submissions can emerge from both classroom work and independent initiatives; they can also be individual or collaborative. Students seeking to brainstorm and discuss their work before officially submitting it are also welcome to MIO any one of the S.P.A.C.E. coordinators, any of whom are available to mentor them.

Contest winners and honorable mentions will be selected by a panel of interdiciplinary jurors. In addition to prizes, there will also be an opportunity for publication on the S.P.A.C.E. website with an accompanying original illustration by an Illustration student.

Prizes will be awarded in each category!

Deadline to apply:
The deadline to apply to the contest is midnight, Sunday, November 3, 2019.

All participants will be informed of the results of the contest by Monday, December 16, 2019.
