Space s – Living space. Empty space. Public space. Interstellar space. Personal space... The camera sees. The camera reveals. It shows us the subject of the picture, but also the space surrounding it. Without that space, there is no context. Without context, there is no meaning. The camera shows us what is there, but it can also show us what is hidden. The in-between spaces. Space s – The universe is yours to capture. As part of the 7th annual ScienceFest conference, and inspired by the SPACE theme of space s, students in all programs are invited to interpret this theme through photography.
Contest rules and submission criteria:
- Use the form below to submit a high resolution image of no more than 10MB. Ideally a resolution of 3000 pixels minimum in the long dimension will be sufficient for large format printing. Be sure to also retain as high of a resolution image as possible in the event that your image is selected for printing.
- In addition to the photograph, include a maximum 100 word caption that captures its relevance to science and to the contest theme. The caption is very important if you are serious about winning the contest. It should present your artistic vision for the photograph, and the connection with science and with the theme. Be creative.
- Though digital SLR cameras generally produce better quality images than a cell phone, any camera type may be used. Indicate the camera used on the submission form.
- Also, software such as Adobe Photoshop is permitted for enhancements and retouches, but not to modify the contents or authenticity of the subject of the photograph.
Submit your photo and description by 11:59 PM March 30 to be eligible.
Judging criteria and selection process:
- Photographs will be judged on scientific value, aesthetic and relevance to the theme.
- A pre-selection will be made. All the images retained at this stage will be prepared for virtual publication (no longer printed in large format) and put on display during ScienceFest and the following week, from April 6-30, 2021.
- A jury will examine the photographs and select the winners (Jury Prizes). In addition, the public will be given an opportunity to vote for the best photograph (People’s Choice Award).
- Winners will be announced at the end of ScienceFest, and prizes given during the awards ceremony (date to be determined).
