Lac Megantic: A people

Only three days after the event that destroyed Lac megantic, Irene Ogrizek, on July 9 found herslef interested in how the citizens of the town react and deal with themselves and each other. This photo essay reflects some of people and their shared anxieties. These photos include anxious man being bused out of town; brothers retelling their story running from the fireball that rolled down their street; angry graffitti and sentiments; a woman still in her pyjamas as all else was destroyed. Some of these photos appear in the exhibit in 5C.1 running from Feb. 24 - March 5. Comments welcome.

It’s quite amazing how much a photograph can convey; the idiom: “a picture is worth a thousand words” is tossed around more and more thanks to the internet promoting the proliferation of pictures. I’d argue it goes beyond words even, we see emotions and state of mind which are conveyed in a far more direct manner than language can hope to be. Everyone communicates in, to varying degrees,  the language of human emotions, the language of observation, and the language of empathy. With the proliferation of more and more pictures of daily life and specific events, historians of the future have an enviable direct route to life and environments of the past much unlike their current counterparts. When looking at these pictures a person across the globe or a hundred years from now will be able to comprehend the situation, and that in of itself is beautiful.

I believe that a picture can be interpreted in many different ways and fashions. A picture in itself can mean a thousand words far more than an article. There is a reason why people cry over a movie and not over novels. It is that visual on movie screen or in a photo gallery that captures our attention and releases our emotions. The fourth picture in particular really caught my attention. A display board with the town’s people’s signatures on it and a very heartfelt quote written. “You took our people away. You will not take any more of them. We have them now. Our guardian angels.” When looking at this photo taken by Irene Ogrizek, I can feel the hardship the people from Lac Megantic had to face. Now not only me, but everyone from all over the world can see these heartfelt photos and actually understand what they went through.

These pictures capture a moment which has shaken the world. This event has changed the lives of many, but especially for those who live in Lac Megantic. Through these pictures, I feel the pain of the residents of this beautiful town felt. The fear and confusion on their faces demonstrates the hardships and severe suffering they have to live through every day of their life. Through the posters I see anger due to their lost loved ones but also due to their frustration of how this all could have been avoided. These images represent the suffering and anger of a devastating situation and anyone who views these images could see they are in pain. No one deserves to live through a moment like that.
