I Want to Be

I want to be that girl,

You know-

The one who’s heels click clack on the pavement.

The one who’s dress reaches just past her thighs.

The one who has her hair in a messy up-do that doesn’t look so messy.

(Rest)

I want to be that girl.

The one who wears the stiffest button up shirt

(That still somehow look comfortable).

The one that reads a niche feminist poetry book on the subway.

The one who has a million buttons and pins on her book bag.

(Rest)

I want to be that girl.

The one who looks good jogging.

The one who’s hair flip flops from side to side as she runs.

The one who’s music is so loud, she’s tuned out the rest of the world.

As if it’s just her and the song and that is all.

(Rest)

I want to be that lawyer.

The one that fights with every last breath.

The one that commands the room with every word.

The one that loves her job, because she can.

(Rest)

I want to be that poet.

The one who crafts metaphors and euphemisms out of thin air.

The one that commands the room with every word.

The one that writes prose as if it were a second language.

(Rest)

I want to be that athlete.

The one who has mastered her skills.

The one that commands the room with every word.

The one that has the spirit of a true team player.

(Rest)

I want to be that person.

Who doesn’t give a crap what others think.

Who doesn’t compare herself to others.

Who doesn’t constantly look down upon herself in anguish-

constantly saying I want to be.

(Rest)

I want to be-

I want to be-

Four little words with a burning degree.

They seem to mean nothing-

but they can mean everything.

(Rest)

I want to be capable-

of finding the beauty in myself

of finding my worth.

But how can I?

When all I want is to be.
