What we publish

SPACE accepts a variety of genres, whether written (fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, articles, essays, research papers), audio-visual (photos, posters, videos, podcasts, songs) or a combination of the two.

SPACE is especially interested in writing that relates in some way to the sciences, technology and society. The sciences includes the social sciences—economics, political science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc.

If you have work that fits that description, SPACE invites you to submit it for publication on our website.

The SPACE website is open to submissions from all Dawson College students, faculty and other staff, as well as to members of the wider community, although our first priority is to support Dawson students in becoming active learners and engaged citizens.

Submission period

SPACE accepts general submissions to its website anytime throughout the academic year, from late August to mid-May.

Please note that SPACE also hosts an annual writing competition and photography competition which have their own submission deadlines.

The submissions process

Submissions to SPACE can be made through the form below.

Submissions should be more or less ready to publish with relatively minor changes needed. If submissions require major changes, they will be sent back to you for further revisions. If you need help revising your submission, you can reach out to a teacher or a friend or email Ursula Sommerer at usommerer@dawsoncollege.qc.ca to connect with one of the SPACE coordinators.

Before you submit your work, we highly recommend that you read carefully through the SPACE student submissions resource, which includes guidance to make sure that work is accessible, engaging and well-written as possible before it is submitted. The resource also includes templates, examples and inspiration for different kinds of written work you could submit to the SPACE website.

Submissions should also include the name of a Dawson faculty member (e.g. your teacher) who is endorsing the submission. Work can be submitted without a faculty recommendation as well, but the priority of our editing team will be faculty-recommended work.

If you would like to pitch a proposal for a submission or request help developing a submission idea, please do not use the portal but contact Ursula Sommerer at usommerer@dawsoncollege.qc.ca, and she will direct your request to the appropriate coordinator to help you develop your ideas.

You can also attend one of the SPACE publishing workshops held during the year which help students prepare to submit their work to the SPACE website.

Preparing your submission

Before you submit your work to SPACE, please do the following:

  • Edit it carefully for spelling and grammar and to make it as accessible and engaging as possible to an audience of fellow students across the disciplines.
  • Find the name of a teacher who is willing to endorse and sign-off on your submission
  • If your project requires photos of your work (e.g. a photo of a sculpture or mechanical device), make sure to take high-quality photos with good lightning
  • Give your work a title—e.g. “Challenging the doom narrative on climate change”
  • Write a very short one-sentence summary of your piece––e.g. “The doom narrative, if believed by too many, could hinder the progress we must make towards a healthier planet.”
  • Find a copyright-free image to accompany your submission through a website such as https://creativecommons.org
  • Write a short 1-2 sentence bio for yourself a.  Bios require, at minimum, your name, year and program of study.
