UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO SIN AWARDS

The Physics Department of the University of Waterloo gives several Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) Awards each year to students proceeding towards an Honors Physics degree in either Regular or Co-operative Applied Physics at the University of Waterloo.

Each year, several SIN Scholarships are offered to incoming first year Physics students, mainly on the basis of the SIN Exam results. These scholarships can pay the student up to $4,000 over the course of their time at the University of Waterloo. They also give book prizes to the top students writing the exam regardless of whether or not they study physics at the University of Waterloo.

Each year more than 5000 students across Canada take part in the SIN Exam. A SIN Exam is meant to challenge the best students to apply basic physics in problem situations. Few perfect papers are written and the “raw average score” is typically 15-20%. Some of the questions are interesting and amusing enough that the average student will not have too great a feeling of frustration or despair. The results are never seen by any admission people and cannot count against a student in any way. So, a student has nothing to lose by taking the SIN Exam.
