1980's London: A group home for psychiatric patients that has been vandalised; a lack of funding from the conservative government; a faltering economy. This is the setting for Sarah Daniel's Beside Herself directed by Barbara Kelly and opening a new year of engaging theatre by the Professional Theatre Program of Dawson College. This provocative play tackles the dark subject of sexual abuse in a compelling and entertaining manner. In this psychological study of three women living with the aftermath of childhood abuse, Daniels cleverly unravels their secrets as they become entangled in a drama at the group home. The shortcomings of the transition of hospital patients to community care and the sexist and homophobic attitudes of the professionals are also revealed. The play, although realistic in style, is imaginatively inspired by a meeting of biblical women in a supermarket-giving us food for thought in 2010!
