Application: The en-tropy Exhibition

Explore your interpretation of en-tropy. The grand opening for the en-tropy exhibition is on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm., and the show runs from April 19, 2018 to May 10, 2018 in the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery of Dawson College. If you wish to contribute to an exhibition project and related events on this theme, read more about the project and how to make a submission. Your submission does not have to be an artwork; it simply has to express a point of view that is particular to the individual or group that submits it. The exhibition can be thought of more as an experiment rather than an art show, with a wide range of items on display that can include writing, notes, diagrams, theories, sculptures, music, soundscapes, videos, prints, photos, experimental data, interactive pieces, songs, dance, happenings, installations, machines, mixed media, drawings, paintings or many other things. The purpose of this experiment is to discover how our understandings of en-tropy will be altered or expanded by the experience of each item on display and by the juxtaposition of these items in the exhibition space.
Deadline to submit material for the exhibition: Friday, February 23, 11:59 p.m., 2018. Late submissions may still be accepted, but act quickly please to increase the likelihood of acceptance into the exhibition. Although the exhibition will open April 18, 2018, all submissions must be received by midnight February 23 in order to have time to prepare an exhibition catalogue.

Exhibition Material – What and how to submit: use the submission form supplied here. You must first be logged in with your S.P.A.C.E. user name and password. If you don't yet have a S.P.A.C.E. user name and password, you can create one and then log in. After logging in, you may have to revisit this page and then scroll down to the bottom to see the submission form.
Fill in the required fields with your identifying information. For the dimensions of a physical object, indicate the size in centimeters (height precedes width, for 3D pieces add depth). For recordings, instead of size, indicate duration in minutes and seconds. Other media may require different approaches.
Submit a statement: Write your full name, and below this your text that describes how the submitted material addresses the notion of En-tropy. Length: approx. 150-250 words. This text should be written in a way that is ready for print in an exhibition catalogue. Make sure to proofread the text carefully and get feedback from others. Make sure that no double spaces exist between words or sentences, because this can cause problems with layout if incorporated into the exhibition catalogue. Submit a digital file of the item to be submitted. It should be properly scanned or photographed or recorded or otherwise documented. the file name should be written with the last and first names of the creator plus the title of the piece (title can be shortened), all with lower case letters and using a hyphen between the last name of the creator and the title, and underscores between all other words as indicated below. Hyphens may be used for hyphenated names. For images, reproduction-quality jpg files please. The material must be complete and ready for exhibition and reproduction in the exhibition catalogue; not work in progress. See example for how to name a file below:

Regarding the submission of reproduction-quality images, here are some tips. For 2D work that exists in physical form, make sure that the camera is centered and perpendicular to the artwork. Don’t light the subject frontally because surfaces may glare undesirably. The light source(s) should not be too close to the subject to avoid "hotspots" and rapid decrease in light intensity across the surface of the subject. For all types of work: to obtain proper colour, set the colour balance setting of your camera to "AWB" (automatic white balance). You can also set the white balance to specific light sources like tungsten or fluorescent or daylight, but this requires some prior knowledge. Put your camera on a tripod to avoid motion blur. Set the "ISO" to the lowest possible number (50 or 100) to minimize visual noise. Set picture quality and resolution to the highest. If the artwork and surrounding elements are very light and you are relying on automatic light readings to determine exposure settings, then intentionally overexpose in order to make the subject look light. If the artwork is very dark, then intentionally underexpose. If you have photo editing software, make sure that the resulting photos are "lens corrected" so that the artwork does not look distorted and so that straight lines look straight. Make sure that each image is properly cropped, with no errors along the edges. Make sure that each image measures at least 2100 pixels in its longest dimension.
